The Shepparton Facility, based at Guthrie Street Primary School, was established in 1995 to provide for Deaf and Hearing Impaired children who require intensive language support in the Goulburn Valley area.

The Facility caters for both sign and oral communication modes. Although Auslan Interpreting is provided for all classrooms as part of a Bi-lingual /Bi-Cultural educational philosophy, listening and speech are emphasised. Individual programming supports children and their families in their chosen methods of communication.

Students who are Deaf or Hearing Impaired are placed in regular classes with hearing children of the same age. Students have the opportunity to maintain deaf and hearing friends. They participate in the same range of activities, subjects and curriculum as all other children. Specific Facility programs include Deaf Studies and learning English Through Auslan.

School based support is provided by qualified Teachers of the Deaf, Deaf Adults and Interpreters giving the best possible access to mainstream education. We promote and develop independence and ensure Deaf students are competent communicators using a range of communication modes.

Our Language Other Than English [LOTE] subject at our host school [Guthrie Street Primary School] is Auslan Sign Language - taught in all classrooms Prep -6.

We currently have 13 children enrolled at Guthrie Street Primary School
supported by Deaf Facility staff.
